History:

The origins of artichokes date back to the time of the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus (371-287 B.C.), who wrote about their growth in Italy and Sicily. Ancient Greeks and Romans considered artichokes an aphrodisiac and in Greece they were also thought to be effective in securing the birth of boys. In the 1800s, French immigrants brought artichokes to the United States when they settled in the Louisiana Territory. In the latter part of the 1800s, French colonists established artichokes in the Monterey area of California. California is now the world’s largest producer of artichokes. In the 1920s, Ciro Terranova “Whitey”, a member of the mafia known as the “Artichoke King,” began his monopoly of the artichoke market by purchasing all the produce shipped to New York from California for $6 a crate. He created a produce company and sold the artichokes at a 30-40% profit. This later led to “the artichoke wars” and the mayor of New York at the time, Fiorello La Guardia banned the sale, display and possession of artichokes. The ban was lifted after only one week when the mayor admitted that he himself loved the vegetable.

Nutrition:

Artichokes contain the chemical, cynarin, which researchers are finding benefits the liver. Silymarin is another compound found in artichokes that has powerful anti-oxidant properties. A medium artichoke has 25 calories and provides phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, chromium, potassium, iron and calcium. They are also a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and folate. They are low in sodium and have no fat or cholesterol. They can help reduce the risk of many kinds of heart disease, cancer and birth defects.

Recipe:

Artichoke Soup

Serving Size: 10

INGREDIENTS:

o 20 fresh artichokes

o 2 tablespoons kosher salt

o 3 sliced lemons

o 2 oz. olive oil

o ? cup diced celery

o ? cup diced leeks

o 1 cup diced white onions

o ? cup diced shallots

o 1 tablespoon minced garlic

o 1 bay leaf

o 1 quart vegetable stock

o 5 ounces sliced truffles

o opal basil oil

o salt and pepper to taste

Simmer the artichokes in salted lemon water until tender. Remove them from the water and cool in an ice bath. Peel away the leaves. Remove the hearts and bottoms and dice them.

In a soup pot, heat the olive oil and add the celery, leeks, onions, shallots and garlic and saut? until tender.

Add the diced artichokes, bay leaf and stock and simmer for approximately 45 minutes.

Remove from the heat, remove the bay leaf, puree the soup in a blender and strain through a strainer.

Adjust the seasonings with salt and pepper and adjust the consistency with additional stock if necessary.

Pour the soup into hot soup bowls. Garnish with sliced truffles and opal basil oil and serve.

Do You Invest Your Time Or Spend Your Time?

As you get older you realize how quickly time goes by. Years seem to scamper past and suddenly the kids are fully grown, the mortgage has been paid off and you wonder how it all happened. You remember those long summers which you experienced as a child; days which seemed to go on and on forever. And yet now, several years can seem to pass in what seems to be a shorter period of time.

It’s easy to look back and wonder what you have done with your life. In hindsight you can decide whether you did spend your time wisely or not. But at the time when life is happening, you can get so tied up in the trivia of daily life that you forget to plan for the really important things. You write a list when you go shopping for groceries, or one when you are packing to go on holiday. But do you write down the most important things?

Do you write down things like showing appreciation and love to your spouse every day? Do you plan to enjoy preparing meals or walking the dog, or do you just do these things? Do you spend quality time with your parents or grandparents? Many things get lost at the back of your mind as you focus on certain things which seem so very important at the time. But are they really that important? Have you got your priorities right?

If you haven’t prioritized then you may look back and think that you have wasted an awful lot of time. To spend time identifying what is most important to you and planning to invest in those things is time spent well; it is time being invested in the things which feel worthwhile to you.

The very most important thing to invest in, most people will agree, is your close relationships. Other things matter a lot as well, but rarely does anything affect your happiness and well-being as much as your closest relationships do. And yet many of us will hold up our hands and admit that these relationships are frequently taken for granted. Often your relationship has become stale and mundane before you realize that there is something amiss.

Anyone can re-generate love in their relationship so long as they wish to do so and focus upon doing so. It may take a little time and effort, but it is a good investment and the effort isn’t really that great when you stop to think about it. Surely it’s not a hardship to reach out and stroke your spouse’s hand from time to time, or to focus a smile into their eyes, is it? Or to go to bed earlier than usual with the intention of snuggling up close together? Or cuddling on the sofa whilst watching a movie?

Should Presidential Candidates Be Required to Disclose Their Health Records?

Should Presidential Candidates be required to disclose their health records? This is a most controversial question. American people are prone to be swayed by sympathy; as well as prejudice opinions. Just as now, there is so much bigotry debate concerning Obama and his ethic race. And so with Hillary Clinton because she is a woman; even McCain because he is not in good health. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

Health records are of very little relevance to whether or not a person is a capable candidate for the office of president. Besides, let us hope that anyone that tosses their hat into the campaign arena would have the good sense to know, and take that fact into serious consideration, if anything in their health record would hinder their ability to run our great country of America. Everyone has had various events in their life that would be more a determinately issue than prior health. Let us take a quick reflection to President Franklin Roosevelt, who served our nation during war time, and he was a victim of polio. Oh yeah! He got a lot of criticism but he served our country longer than any other president.

Our today society can be overly judgmental, and sometime to quick to predict the result by unprofessional argument. Many people give their view that is rendered by impulse, and hear say; rather than scientific facts. If the person making the statement is considered to be a prominent citizen, some of our public voters will not even question the prediction; moreover, they will continue to spread the prophecy without ever giving the issue a second thought; nor taking the time to research the facts. We could call that idle gossip, but no matter the name that is tagged onto it, this sort of campaign rallying can create havoc; as well as, so much unnecessary misunderstandings. But, that is a privilege that we have in the United States of America. That freedom being ‘The Freedom Of Speech’.

Should Presidential Candidates be required to disclose their health records? The only reason that a Presidential Candidate should be required to disclose their health records would be in order to archive the records for future history reference. One of the reasons that draws me to this conclusion would be that when a person has had enough experience to gain the wisdom needed to be an effective leader, they will be on into years. Statistics show that very few people past the age of thirty-five years has a perfect health record.

Our country is defiantly in need of a change to improve our laws, our health benefits, and much more; but knowing our Candidates and their past health record is trivia so far as the betterment of our nation.

God Bless America, and God Bless our Troops that continue to give us the opportunity to write articles such as this. It is the health issues of our troops when they return home that we should be making a priority of improvement. Without our Troops we would have no need to debate Presidential Candidates.

For centuries, creative writing has been accepted as beneficial to people with emotional problems. Aristotle described the cathartic effect of drama. Shakespeare warned: “Give sorrow words. The grief that does not speak/ Whispers the o’er fraught heart and bids it break.” And twentieth century researchers began to seek an evidence base for this – hoping to establish a cornerstone for creative writing therapy.However some of the findings have surprised even the already-converted. In independent studies, benefits of creative writing have proved certainly emotional and spiritual but also psychological and physical.

Alzheimers’ Disease Patients, for example, are now regularly offered the opportunity of contact with working poets. They talk. The poets listen. The poets create poems from the patients’ words. The patients read these poems and re-gain, however briefly, their sense of ‘self’. This is also a gift to the people who love them.

But creative writing is also now recognised as a stress-buster, forming part of corporate stress management programmes. A bit left-field, you think? Not so. Engaging in writing down serious autobiographical material can lead – as the Alzheimer Patients find – to an increased sense of self (and self-worth) and a sense of control over one’s life. Insufficient control over the work we are paid to do, for example, has already been identified as a major source of stress in the Health & Safety Executive’s Stress Management Standards.

In the 1990s, author of Opening up and psychologist James Pennebaker identified that meaningful creative writing about autobiographical material (ie not about trivia) resulted in a strengthened immune system and reduced blood pressure. This could help to militate against certain cancers, stroke and heart disease. And, even arthritis sufferers have been found to need fewer pain-killers when encouraged to engage in creative writing.

How creative writing works is well-documented.

As Julia Cameron indicates in her seminal work, The Artist’s Way, writing is a means of problem solving. She advocated – as all we coaches do – free writing to throw up repeating themes, concerns and even solutions. For example, she explains how Phyllis – a leggy, socialite – had for ten years written nothing but letters and shopping lists. But after starting to free-write – Cameron’s morning pages – she wrote her first poem and has moved on to many more.

It’s now generally accepted, according to Yogic principles, all the thoughts and ideas populating the ‘busy brain’ can keep you awake at night. So, having a journal by the bedside and writing them all down may even help with the insomnia produced. Once these images and issues are ‘out’ of the brain and – in the form of words on the page – become a visible presence, the writer can re-read them later (ie next morning) with a fresh perspective and focus. An empty brain allows you to sleep.

Increased interest in the deployment of the humanities in the practice of medicine and social care has resulted in a whole range of projects, pulled together in the Prospectus for Arts and Health (published by the Arts Council and the Department of Health). For example, funding has been made available for the inclusion of creative writing within a medical humanities model for the medical students of the University of Bristol.

In his foreword to Writing Works – a resource handbook for Therapeutic Writing Workshops and activities, published in 2006 by Jessica Kingsley and edited by Gillie Bolton, Victoria Field and Kate Thompson, Blake Morrison expresses the view that creative writing should be used to improve life in schools, colleges, hospitals, prisons, rehab clinics and community centres.
